Consular Reports of Birth Abroad

If you are a U.S. citizen, it is possible that any child born to you is a U.S. citizen, too. If the child was born in the State of Chihuahua, you must register the child with us as soon as possible after birth. Parents of US citizen children born abroad are urged to obtain a Consular Report of Birth which will serve later as evidence of the child's citizenship for school, work, or other purposes. Evidence required for a Report of Birth includes a certified copy of the child's Mexican birth certificate, hospital documents, parent’s I.D.s and proof of citizenship, marriage and divorce documents, etc., if applicable (please see information below). The fee is US$65. Reports of Birth can be issued until the child has reached the age of eighteen.

If the child was not born in the State of Chihuahua please contact the nearest U.S. Consulate for more information. See directory at: http://mexico.usembassy.gov/mexico/edirectory.html

Do not file an immigrant visa petition until it is determined whether your child has a claim to U.S. citizenship.
